Dead Space is a one-shot from start to finish
According to new information, EA Motive’s Dead Space remake will be “one sequential shot” from start to finish. EA Blog Post.
“From the moment you start the game to the moment you leave the game, there are no camera cuts or loading screens, until you die,” says Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme.
“Ishimura is fully interconnected, so you can walk from point A to point Z, visit the entire ship, or go back to places you’ve already completed and spot things you may have missed. This is all new. Not completely broken now. Experience.”
Another major release of one-shot fame is the soft reboot of God of War (2018). The god of war Ragnarok is expected to do the same.
Ducharme also stressed the need to “respect the legacy” of the original game, thus enhancing the experience while preserving the core foundation.
In practice, this means that the remake’s story will take inspiration from the wider lore and comics of Dead Space 2 and 3.
Of course, there will be significant technical improvements over the original, including developing the game on EA’s proprietary Frostbite engine, which is now used by various EA titles.
“[E]All the animations, all the textures, all the effects, some of the enemy behavior, all the really important elements have been rebuilt in the new engine,” said Roman Campos-Oriola, Creative Director.
The new console’s additional computing power also means the team can enhance the game’s lighting, shadows, and volumetric fog, which are essential components of any horror game.
It also enhances Dead Space’s signature disconnect system, so players can see every gory detail.
Dead Space is set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on January 27th.
